Thanks to Daniel who wrote to say; "My father and I have been working at this site for many years and never fail to be amazed at the sheer size of these beautiful trees. The first measures 7.2 meters at a meter height and the second 6.5 meters. We think the tallest maybe in the region of 30 meters in height but no way to check. It’s at the front of a converted lunatic asylum where the foundations were first laid in 1830." Yes, they are amazing trees, even now I'm astonished by their magnitude when I get up close to some of the older specimens we have in this country. It's interesting to hear about the era of the date of the building works. Although the foundations may have been laid in 1830, the building was completed in 1852 which I believe is the year before seeds from Giant Sequoia were brought over by the Victorian plant hunters. Perhaps once the building was complete they shifted their attention to the grounds and decided to plant these newly discovered trees. |
