Giant and Coast Redwoods - January 2008 | |
Thanks to Richard for sending photographs of these Redwoods in Scone Palace. Richard wrote; "The Pinetum at Scone Palace, Perthshire has several Giant Redwoods. It may have some Coastals as well, I don't remember. Very impressive selection of other trees there - including some huge Sitka Spruce." The photographs of the Sitka Spruce are on the left. Looking at the foliage, I believe that the bottom middle photograph is of a Coast Redwood. The Pinetum at Scone Palace also contains a vast Douglas Fir which was raised from the original seed sent by David Douglas to Scone in 1826. David was born at Scone in 1798 and worked as an under-gardener at the Palace in his early years. While at the Botanical Gardens in Glasgow he was sent to America as a collector for the Royal Horticultural Society and during one of his trips he discovered the Douglas Fir for which he is famous. |
