Dunston Hall has a very large Giant Redwood outside the front of the hotel. There are also several more, and a few Coast Redwood, amongst other trees near the golf course. The Victorian hall was built in 1859 by Robert Kellet, although the original hall on the Dunston estate was built in 1629 (-1859). In 1992 Keith and Heather Shaw bought the hall and surrounding land, developing the site into Dunston Hall Hotel and Country Club. The Greenalls Group purchased Dunston Hall and 1999 at a cost of £16.5 million and it became part of their De Vere group of hotels. Thanks to Robert who wrote in May 2021 with an updated girth measurement for this tree of 6.64 metres. He wrote "At the standard 1.5 m above ground, I measured the girth at 6.64 m, a modest increase over the measurement from 14 years prior." As you say Robert, a modest increase but the tree may be rocketing height-wise, I must return to measure it one day. |
