Giant Redwood - October 2023
Thanks to Cathy who wrote to say; "I was very excited when I found your website and eagerly looked to find my local trees, only to find they are missing from the website. This isn't that odd, except in my local public park we have 25 of them and it's in suburban London.

The park is the Dollis valley brook and Finchley golf club in Finchley Central North London. The park was built by Henry Tubbs who planted the trees for his house Nether Court which was built in 1883, so the trees I presume can't be older than that. Most of the trees line the entrance to what is now the golf club, the others are scattered around what would have been the grounds of the house.

The grounds are maintained by Barnet council and it looks like after losing some they have recently planted 4 new ones, so they are looking after our redwoods. They did fell one 2 years ago as it was too close to some modern flats, a shame but nice to see the lovely red wood.

I've sent you some of my pictures including one with me in it with the biggest of the trees; It's about 7m in circumference."

Thank you for the details of the Redwood trees in Finchley. I don't always receive an interesting story on sites, so I was really pleased to get it with the photographs. It's an amazing collection, and yes it is surprising that nobody had written to us before about them. The 7m circumference tree is quite large for a British specimen, thank you for taking the time for the measurement.

As you said, it's sad that the council cut down one of them because it was too close to some modern flats, but that's not an uncommon story these days I'm sorry to say. At least they have planted the four new ones, which is great news and quite a rare thing (since Victorian times, I should say!).

"We went to the golf club last night and found 3 more large redwoods just outside Mr Tubbs house. He really liked those trees!"
