Thanks to Peggy for another find in the Carse of Gowrie between Perth and Dundee.
Peggy wrote; "Behind the second gate house at the northern entrance to the grounds of Megginch Castle stand two enormous Sequoiadendron giganteum said to be given to the estate owners by Patrick Matthew who lived one half mile to the east of the estate. These trees are much larger than the 31 Errol Park trees which may attest to their older age.
The first Giant Redwood seeds to be sent out of California were gathered by John Matthew and shipped to his father Patrick Matthew of Gourdiehill. Matthew distributed his seedlings to several of his friends. Known locations of these original trees are: Megginch Castle, Goudiehill, Ballindean, Inchture and Matthew’s father’s old farm 'Rome' near Scone Palace. The co-ordinates are: 56.407085, -3.234330 and 56.407085, -3.234789" |
