Thanks to Charles for sending the above photographs of Redwoods in Queenswood Arboretum. Charles says, "I notice that you didn't have any record of redwoods in Herefordshire. Well, I have discovered some! At Queenswood Arboretum on the A49 between Hereford and Leominster there is a grove of no less than 74 coast redwoods. Apparently they were all planted in 1957 and are now about 80 feet tall. On exploring the park I also discovered a number of Giant Redwoods all planted in 1967. I reckon these are about 40 foot tall. Finally, to the north of the arboretum I came across a rather grand Giant Redwood hidden amongst a host of other trees......the red bark gave it away! This tree was taller than any of the other Giants in the park." Queenswood Arboretum is in the middle of Queenswood Country Park on the top of Dinmore Hill and has hundreds of unusual trees from around the world. Congratulations for putting Herefordshire on the Redwood World map! |

Thanks to Charles' discovery, these photographs were taken while visiting Queenswood one cold Autumn day. The grove of Coast Redwood is indeed superb, and there is a magnificent Coast Redwood standing alone nearby that was planted in 1953. It was interesting to see that the lone tree had a much greater girth despite being roughly the same age and height. The trees in the grove were up to 3.2metres in girth and around 33metres in height. The table includes just the four corner trees of the grove for reference (Trees 2 - 5). Having failed to find most of the Giant Redwood at Queenswood (owing to lack of time), I did locate the one (Tree 6) in North Wood amid the bracken. Be warned though that it is currently (2008) home to what appears to be a hornet nest. |
