Giant Redwood - 2017 close to the Grade II listed country house and converted stable block |
Thanks to Helen for sending photographs of three Giant Redwoods in Hawkwood College. Helen said; "Hawkwood College consists of a Grade II listed country house and a converted stable block set in 40 acres which have been managed sustainably since at least the 1930s. Hawkwood College can offer 7 function rooms and 30 bedrooms sleeping up to 50 people. Much of the food which appears on the tables at mealtimes is organically grown on the property. I spotted three giant redwoods during my stay, but due to inadequate footwear and a lack of free time, I did not cover the whole estate. The nicest of the three trees is located below the entrance to the buildings at Hawkwood and stands more or less alone. There is a further tree just inside the driveway entrance. It has other species surrounding it and is a bit difficult to separate from its neighbours. The third tree is close to polythene tunnels where garden produce is grown; and a cowshed accommodating juvenile beasts rather than milking cows. The cab driver who took me from the station up to Hawkwood said that there are numerous other Redwood trees in the Stroud area, but lack of time and transport meant that I was unable to seek any of them out." |
