Kit wrote to tell us how she started looking out for Redwood trees, it's always interesting to hear about people's First Encounters. "I recently read "Overstory" by Richard Powers and have subsequently become obsessed with Redwood trees. Since then, I discovered your website and found a few trees close to where I live in Suffolk, now as a student in London I've been on the lookout! I think I may have found a Dawn Redwood in Clissold Park in Stoke Newington. It looks somewhat tired though and its leaves and branches are very sparse :( I missed it at first because it looks like a dead trunk but as I got closer, I recognised the texture and colour of the bark matches that of a Dawn Redwood. Also, upon looking at the branches, they seem to as well, although I may be wrong! " Thank you for letting me know about this Dawn Redwood, your instincts were correct as far as I can see, it is one! It does look sparse, as you said, but hopefully it will put on some more foliage next Spring.
