Ryde - Firestone Copse (Isle of Wight)

Coast Redwood - December 2022

Melanie wrote in May 2022 to tell us about a stand of Coast Redwood in Firestone Copse near Ryde but her email slipped through our net (this happens ocassionally unfortunately). Here are a selection of the photographs taken in December that she sent to us.

She wrote; "I believe there are several coast redwoods in Firestone copse in the Isle of Wight including one fallen one. The fallen trunk seems to be still growing. If I had realised what they were at the time I would have taken more pictures, especially of the upright ones. I saw 5 or 6 I think, maybe more."

Thank you Melanie, they are definitely Coast Redwood and it's not surprising that the fallen trunk is sprouting foliage, this is a charateristic of Coast Redwoods, as can be seen in the example of this page at Leighton in Wales
