New Mills - High Lee Park (Derbyshire) |
Thanks to Steve for the information and photograph of this Giant Redwood in New Mills. Steve says "We have a Giant Redwood, Wellingtonia, Sequoiadendron giganteum in High Lee Park, New Mills, High Peak, Derbyshire, as can be seen in the photograph. It is planted a little close to the edge of the walled garden, but there's room for many years growth before that problem needs addressing. Measured on 24th of January 2008. Girth at 1.5 meters 3.5 meters. Height as close as I can estimate 48 feet. Grid reference SJ 996 855 I'm not sure who planted it, most likely one of my predecessors, I do remember though that about 20 years ago we had it decked out with Christmas lights which we put on off a ladder. I wouldn't like to try it now." A lovely tree, showing the classic conical shape of a young Wellingtonia, although you would certainly need a few hundred metres of lights to decorate it now! |
