Hornchurch - Wingletye Lane (Essex) |
Tree No. 1 - August 2019 |
The tallest of this set of Giant Redwoods was a surprise find on a drive down Wingletye Lane in 2005. In March 2007, it had already grown an astonishing 1.4m in two years, a good rate of growth for a tree in such an urban environment. Two years later its rate of growth seems to have slowed. Ignoring the possibly inaccurate measurement in 2008, (it may have temporarily lost its leader) it appears to have grown just .7m in height during the two years from 2007 - 2009. Ten years on in 2019 it now measures 13.8metres, growing another 3.3 metres after having suffered another loss of its leader judging by the shape at the top. |

I am ashamed to say that in 2005 I did not notice the others standing further down the road on the other side of the busy junction. Thanks to Dave for letting me know about the one on the opposite side of the junction, and on a visit to measure this in 2007 I noticed a further three Wellingtonia spaced some distance apart along the street! |

Tree No. 3 - March 2009 |
Unfortunately Tree No. 2 had gone in 2019, perhaps having succumbed to injuries from the iron fence that it had grown into, which ironically had been put round many years earlier for its protection. |
Tree No. 3 - August 2019 |
Tree No. 3 was looking very healthy in August 2019 (as were all the other survivors - all in incredible condition with amazingly lush foliage) and as an added bonus we discovered three young Dawn Redwood trees having been planted along this same verge since our last visit. |

Congratulations to Havering Council for their foresight in choosing such a noble type of tree! They look quite cute at the moment, but in time they will grow to be magnificent landmarks. The five Giant Redwood trees increased in height from 2007 - 2011 as follows:
