Thanks to Connor for his email saying "I'm sure I found a coast redwood today on our woodland in north Devon, it is about 6.5 feet across at the trunk, then splits into two and one of the two trees that split from the trunk is 5.5 feet wide!", and he is correct about it being a Coast Redwood as can be seen from his photograph.
He went on to say that "it's interesting because we are about eighteen fields away from Arlington Court, which is a very big mansion with acres and acres of ground and woodland. It was once owned by the Chichesters who owned a large proportion of north Devon. Arlington has been passed to the national trust but I think back then this woodland was probably also part of theirs (we're talking 18 to 19 hundreds), perhaps one of the family planted it? It would make it more interesting if that were the case. It's an all oak, beech, hazel and birch private woodland with the odd western red cedar, and old spruce trees at the top and then the massive redwood just plonked in between it all!" |
