Tony wrote to say "I'm glad to have found your site. You've only one Totnes Giant Redwood and it's not this one. It's in Station Road, Totnes, Devon at the corner of the entrance to what was a supermarket car park. Planted about 150 years ago. Do have a look on google streetview - note the low branch over the building. The land has been bought by Churchill Retirement Living who have applied to build a block of retirement flats there. Part of their submission includes work to the tree which I find questionable but has been approved by the Tree Officer. Here's the schedule It is 'T2' in the plans and is a protected tree TPO 1009. I think the work is unnecessary - a Cobra bracing system has not been needed until Churchill turned up. I'd be grateful for a second opinion." Thank you for highlighting this, it's difficult for me to comment on the brace system etc without visiting the tree and because I have no formal qualifications in this area. I will say that on my travels visiting many hundreds of Redwood trees I have never seen a requirement to use such braces on them. |
