Thornham Hall boasts a superb collection of six Giant Redwoods. The friendly owners kindly allowed us to measure and photograph their specimen trees and mentioned that one had been planted by the Duke of Edinburgh in 1866, which was the year that Queen Victoria's second son Prince Alfred was given the title in the Queen's Birthday Honours. |

Thanks to Ed who sent the above photograph of the plaque confirming the planting of a Giant Sequoia by the Duke of Edinburgh in 1866 to commemorate his visit to Thornham Hall. Giant Redwood planting in large country estates was very fashionable around this time. A story in the Diss Express said that a book published in 2006 by Hoxne resident Stephen Govier titled "The Illustrated History & Antiquities of Hoxne in the County of Suffolk" mentions that "the Prince and Princess of Wales, accompanied by the Duke of Edinburgh, were entertained by the Kerrison family at Oakley Hall, formerly called Hoxne Hall, and the Hennikers at Thornham Hall in 1866." The marvellously preserved plaque reads: WELLINGTONIA GIGANTEA PLANTED BY H.R.H. THE DUKE OF EDINBURGH DEC. 13TH 1866 |
