Matt wrote to tell us "I was walking in Rowney Warren Forest (on the A600, north of Shefford, Bedfordshire) with my family. There are numerous cleared areas of the forest, which now have been replanted with different species of tree by the Forestry Commission. I noticed in one area they have planted a clearance with two blocks of tree species. Half Scots Pine & the other half as Giant Redwood. It was impossible to count how many Giant Redwoods because some are shorter than the surrounding vegetation. However, I would estimate there must be in excess of 100 young Giant Redwoods. They are planted quite close together, perhaps to allow for some that may perish while growing. I have since been told by the Forestry Commission they have also planted a block of Dawn Redwood saplings within Rowney Warren Forest, however I did not notice them on my walk. In addition I noticed elsewhere in Rowney Warren five reasonably tall Coastal Redwoods." A fascinating find Matt, it's great to see the Forestry Commission re-planting and using different types of tree, especially when they are Redwoods of course! |
