Giant Redwood - March 2024

Giant Redwood - March 2024
Thanks to Tom who wrote to say; "My grandson Huxley aged 3 passes this tree on his way to nursery and every time he says 'look that's the biggest tree in Norwich'"

It's located on the corner of Atlantic Avenue and Wroxham Road. With WGS coords Latitude 52.6639428 deg N, Longitude 1.3352741deg E

It's a single tree in the grounds of Sprowston Hall which is now a hotel and golf course. The hall was originally built in the 16th century but was completely rebuilt in the Elizabethan style around 1872. Reading the history of the introduction of the Redwoods to the UK it seems to be quite probable that this tree was planted at the same time the hall was rebuilt. It is exceptionally tall.

Some time in the future I will see if I can get a girth measurement and make a rudimentary inclinometer to establish a possible height."

The photos are great Tom and measurements would also be marvellous. Your grandson could be right about it being the largest tree in Norwich!
