Giant Redwood - May 2021
Thank you to Robert for another Redwood find in May 2021. He sent the above photograph and wrote; "Last Friday on the way to Asda I spotted a couple of Sequoiadendron giganteum next to Lidl near the junction of Mile Cross and Drayton Roads (N52.644644, E1.277181). In the early hours of Saturday morning I went back for some photos and measurements.

The nearer one in the photo had a girth of 4.29 metres and the one further away had a girth of 4.42 metres, both measured at 1.5 metres from ground level. The white building behind them is Lidl. The ground underneath the trees is not manicured by neat freaks so there is a lush carpet of fallen foliage. I believe this material is suppressing weed growth and allowing a number of Quercus robur saplings to develop without competition. Something to tell the next person who moans that S. giganteum is non-native: anecdotally, at least, they may help succession of native trees! "
