The original Ashford Lodge was burnt down and it was replaced by the current building in 1926. The magnificent Giant Redwood in the grounds would have been quite young at that time, but would still have been a fairly substantial tree even then. The current owner is obviously fond of the tree because he has bought a young sapling, as shown in the second photograph. This is in a pot at the moment but when it is ready it will also be planted in the grounds.

** UPDATE April 2015 **

Simon wrote to say "Since you came round to measure our redwoods in 2008, the baby has been planted and has grown rapidly, now measuring 15ft I expect. "

It was good to hear from you Simon, and I am very pleased that your baby has grown so well!
I know how rewarding it is seeing a sapling growing from what was once a tiny seedling in a pot.
