According to one of the locals, these two Giant Redwood in the grounds of the Drummonds care home were planted many years ago by the vicar of the adjacent All Saints church, for his two daughters. There is probably a little more to the story, so if anyone knows about this we would be very pleased to hear. There is also a small Coast Redwood (Sequoia semperivens) of about 8ft tall - quite a rare find! Nearby, in the church grounds, there is a tree that has a peculiarly flaky bark with a rich reddish-mauve colour, as can be seen in the photograph. It is a Paper-bark Maple (Acer griseum). Not a Redwood, admittedly but certainly worth seeing! |

The first visit to these trees was in 2004, and as can be seen from the photograph one of the Giant Redwoods was looking rather sparse and ragged at the top. By 2011 it had recovered from whatever injury caused this and is now looking as healthy and lush at the top as its partner. During this time the very young Coast Redwood has more than doubled in height to 5.8 metres. |
