June 2007
Some advice from a local in the village led to the inclusion of the Giant Redwood at the Munnings Art Collection Museum which is housed in Castle House on Castle Hill. It is just a twenty minute stroll from the centre of Dedham and another local told us that the house itself is worth a visit. It was not open on this particular day but the Sequoiadendron giganteum in the garden still made the visit worthwhile. The gardener informed us that he could see this tree from Stratford St Mary and a passer-by on a bicycle told us it can be seen from Flatford Mill. Such pleasant and informative people in Dedham! Thank you.

A disgusting waste...
Some very sad news from Adrian, following tests performed by "tree specialists" which involved bouncing signals through the trunk, in 2009 it was deemed the tree was rotten at the middle and subsequently felled. As can be seen from the photographs above, in particular the slice of trunk, I believe the tree appears to have been in perfect health. A cynic would be of the opinion that if a company wants to remove a tree and has sufficent funds available, they will always be able to find someone to give them the answer they want and need in order to carry out their destruction. The result is the loss of a remarkable and popular landmark that was enjoyed by the inhabitants of the town, and the irony is that I understand the tree is featured in some of the artists work as the gallery is the former home of the artist.

We were first alerted to the tree's impending doom by an Arboricultural specialist who had been asked to fell the tree after it had been condemned on the basis of a Picus tomomograph test. He was expressing doubt as to the reliabilty of thist test on these trees and in fact he was then looking to try and prevent the tree being removed. Despite his expertise the owners found another aborealist willing to cut down this superb tree.
