Dawn Redwoods - June 2009

Giant Redwood - June 2009
Thanks to Tam for the above photographs. He says that he "went for a drive yesterday to Ardkinglas Woodland. It is a 25 acre garden situated on the edge of Loch Fyne near the village of Cairndow. The estate and the main house are still lived in and there is a separate area which I did not manage to visit. Hopefully another visit will find some Sequoias. The garden has been planted with beautiful trees since the 18th century and has many Champion trees which are the tallest or broadest examples within the British Isles. One such was a Grand fir planted in 1875 which was measured at 203ft in 2002 and is one of the tallest trees in Britain. I thought that I was not going to find any Redwoods until I came across these two Dawns. Then when I was back in the car park I noticed this little 6ft Sequoia right at the entrance at OSGB NN17982 10584, easy to see why I walked past it when looking up at the 100ft mark for tall trees.
