Thanks to Jim who sent photographs of Giant Redwood trees in the gardens of Killerton. Killerton House is a National Trust property near Exeter. The gardens were created by John Veitch and his son James. The very first Wellingtonia brought from California to the U.K. in the Victorian era, (most probably by William Lobb), is believed to have been planted here in 1858. |

The magnificent example of Giant Redwood (Sequoiadendron giganteum) surrounded by the iron fence has a plaque nearby stating that this tree was 125ft (37m) high and 7ft (2m) in diameter in 2002. Our 2008 measurements agree very closely with this but the base of the tree is an example of how tricky it can be to determine the correct height at which to measure the girth. The soil around the base of the tree has been somewhat erroded (hence the iron fence), making it difficult to determine where the trunk ends and the root structure begins. We chose a point that appeared to be the original ground level but this may be a foot or so above that used by others. Just behind the Giant Sequoia, and at around the same height and girth, is a Coast Redwood. It can be seen in Jim's far right photograph and in the two pictures above. This is the second highest and has the largest girth of any Sequoia sempervirens so far measured by Redwood World (May 2008). |
